Just finished Martin Dressler, which won the Pulitzer in 1997. It’s a novel focused on an entrepreneur, starting with Martin Dressler as a boy clerk in his father’s store. Martin has a meteoric rise to become a very successful business man in his 20’s and 30’s. Set in New York City in the 1890’s, it’s a reminder of the growth in a new country. But it’s not a pure fantasy: the book keeps its eye on the scullery maid, the prostitute, and elusiveness of contentment. This book couldn’t win today, in 2012, with economics as they are, but if you want to be reminded of the spirit of a young America then read this “Tale of an American Dreamer”
Just finished Robert Olen Butler’s collection of stories about the Vietnam War. These stories are supposed to be told from a Vietnamese perspective, but they sound like an American man’s to me. But one is brilliant, “An American Couple” about a Vietnamese-American couple and a Vietnam vet and his wife that meet each other on their vacations in Mexico. Explores the terrain of long term relationships and healing wounds from a war, very relevant to today. Makes me wonder — when will the first fiction piece about Iraq win the Pulitzer?
